Resonant Maneuvers as Earth: An Aspect of Cultivating Collective Power as the Mandala
Weaving a ground out of actuality and responsiveness
This article presumes familiarity with the foundation of the series, Resonant Maneuvers: Introduction
A Brief Re-Orientation to Resonant Maneuvers
We are exploring here five aspects of fluid power in small teams, via considering this matter by placing the tradition of American Maneuver Warfare in resonance with Himalayan frameworks of interiority.
The five elements:
Feeling-contact-participation (Fingerspitzengefühl): (1) intuitive situational awareness that (2) arises from open awareness and (3) active participation.
Regime-change-flow (Schwerpunkt): (1) energetic concentration that (2) provides sufficient activation energy to (3) change the situation into a new world.
Trust-context-cohesion (Einheit): (1) human trust and (2) sufficient overlapping orientation to (3) allow high-bandwidth dynamic communication.
Actionable-waveguide-vision (Auftragstaktik): (1) a clear vision of the future to live into (2) constrained only by the possibility of a path there (3) held individually and collectively.
Tempo-fluidity-spaciousness (Behendigkeit) (1) ability to break out of currently effective patterns (2) before they lose traction with reality.
There is also all that which is not of these aspects in whatever way…
Distortion-obscuration-friction (Reibung): The collective inverse of all the prior elements; the unpredictable drag of reality. For Fingerspitzengefühl, Reibung appears as the gap between how we expect actuality to respond and how it does.
This article centers on Feeling-contact-participation (Fingerspitzengefühl), the aspect that most directly concerns actuality-contact itself: the cultivated fingertip-feeling by which a small team co-evolves towards a vision, together with the world.
Feeling-contact-participation is both collective and individual
There are two broad discourses which frame feeling-contact-participation and are familiar to most.
The left-hand bookend is individual feeling-contact-participation. This concern appears across traditions, from Tantra to Heidegger.
The right-hand bookend is team alignment under a shared vision. Werner Erhard’s notion of integrity is one characteristic expression; the broader American business literature on alignment is another.
What lies between these is an aware team creating an evolving vision responsive to the circumstances.
Individual contact with actuality comes from participation: action is its own sight. Perturbing the world reveals how the world responds, most saliently in unexpected ways. Fuller individual participation comes from three qualities:
The noticing of details, especially those previously ignored, as the overlooked often contains the revelatory.
Continual movement between and evolution of views. A view is the landscape of responsive affordances; without it, possibilities for action vanish.
Bold action that constitutes the impulse signal which perturbs the world and so reflects its present-time actuality.
The collective contact of a team can be far greater than individual contact: more details noticed, more views-revealing-affordances in play, more bold actions showing how the world actually responds.
All of this can be present as mere aggregation. To become collective contact, with details, views, and actions in play with each other, requires communication bandwidth the team may not have. Without integration of these diverse forms of interaction (Einheit), the revelations remain siloed off. What is prized is not uniformity but diversity of forms of interaction, whose play and mutual reflection facilitate Behendigkeit.
There is a natural limit to how thick these channels can be: the superorganism’s reach is bounded by each individual’s capacity to receive. High-coupling requires less communication, as more happens collectively by default. Loosely-coupled, i.e., fluid teams, can sustain at most ten to thirty people. This is the same scaling constraint that shapes the Kohärenzeinheit: the coherence unity that rarely exceeds fifty individuals, and often operates best much smaller.
Temporarily tightening the coupling, however, creates a Schwerpunkt of its own: a concentrated moment in which the collective can forge forms of interaction unavailable to loosely-coupled work.
The one prerequisite for integrating this collective sight is a common overarching care, which determines the salience of everything: Auftragstaktik.
Receptivity, Care, Responsibility
The primary distortion-obscuration-friction (Reibung) of feeling-contact-participation is lack of contact with what is happening because of fixed disposition. Contact has three layers:
Receptivity to detail, the raw material of what is happening, prior to being made meaningful, limited by prior assumptions and view.
Care, the felt-sense of relevance, flowing from Auftragstaktik, that makes some detail more salient than others.
Responsibility, the recognition of self-team-world as an inextricable unity, revealing that there is always an opportunity for response, as part of this field.
These three layers are not sequential. They operate simultaneously, and each constrains and reveals the others. Receptivity without care is formless: sensation without meaning, a field of undifferentiated detail that provides no basis for action. Care without receptivity is projection: the felt-sense of relevance applied to an imagined “way the world is”. Responsibility without receptivity and care is abstract duty, disconnected from what is actually happening.
Full responsibility arises out of recognition of self–team–world as one happening: ability to respond, not obligation to respond. Every response trades off energy, attention, and resources against other possible responses. To recognize responsibility for everything entails nobility: taking responsibility for the uncomfortable trade-offs.
Actuality reveals what is possible, and nobility is to choose among incommensurable goods.
A brief discourse on nobility
Contact reveals affordances, and affordances are invitations. Responsibility, an Earth quality, makes the invitations inescapable.
Nobility is a quality of the mandala as a whole: what happens when all five elements are alive and the person or team must choose, knowing that no algorithm resolves the trade-off. Earth is where the incommensurability first becomes palpable; you feel, in your fingertips, that the world is offering more than you can accept.
There is a “solution” to the dilemma of overwhelming invitation, offered here as a three-part practice:
Explore the distinct fields of care. If a single narrative could genuinely contain them all, there would be no dilemma; the dilemma exists precisely because it cannot.
Feel as a somatic experience (in the heart, the gut, in space) each distinct field of care, individually and fully, as a non-conceptual sensory experience.
Metabolize the dilemma: consider the dilemma, then simultaneously enter into the felt sense of all the overlapping but distinct fields of care.
The felt-sense of the dilemma now illuminates the choice, instead of dictating it.
Collective Fingerspitzengefühl
Collective Fingerspitzengefühl is relational, not private. It emerges between practitioner and field, and in teams between people. The field is co-created, so sensing includes sensing the world, sensing self, and sensing others. The unit of sensing is the relational field, not the isolated individual.
There is no view from nowhere. The practitioner’s Fingerspitzengefühl is conditioned by the same situation it is trying to read. The richest contact is distributed but still loosely coupled: multiple perspectives, shared and compared. When someone says “I noticed X” and someone else says “That is interesting, because I noticed Y, and together X and Y suggest Z”, Z is not available to either person alone. It emerges from the relational field. This is the surplus of collective sensing over individual sensing.
This sensing-and-responding capability weakens when people are over-scripted or rigid in role containment; role rotation can be useful because fixed positions produce fixed blind spots. The collective capability improves through trust, openness, willingness to offer partial perceptions: every increment of intimacy is an increment of intelligence. A group that punishes honest noticing will train people not to notice. A group that rewards performative certainty will train people to hide uncertainty. The social ecology of the team is not separate from its sensing capacity; it is its sensing capacity.
Failure Modes
One failure is running a fixed sequence against a changed situation. The obverse is yielding to unhoned intuition. The results of improvised activity must be continually reflected on, individually and collectively; reflection is what turns improvisation into shared intuition. The core breakdown: loss of intimacy with the relational field. The practitioner stops being in contact and starts performing contact. This is rarely self-correcting; it usually takes another’s reflection to make it visible.
More specifically:
Winging it: undertrained improvisation masquerading as intuition. They are filling uncertainty with personality rather than with situation-feel.
Script dependence: the familiar failure. A preloaded sequence executed against a live field that no longer matches.
Dependence on the Master: the novice imitates style without learning to detect the field, producing competence that collapses without the model present.
Emotional certainty mistaken for perception: if the vocabulary of intuition is used to justify whatever one already wanted to do, the maneuver has broken down into self-authorization.
Trust failure: when the group suppresses honest signaling, the sensing layer starves. People stop reporting the actual state of the field.
Fingerspitzengefühl in Relation to Other Maneuver Aspects
Schwerpunkt, Regime-change-flow, is where power concentrates. Fingerspitzengefühl reveals where that concentration should occur. The landscape is not uniform: some points are load-bearing, others are decorative. Without Earth, Water crashes beautifully in the wrong place.
Einheit, Trust-context-cohesion, is how a group coheres without rigidity. Earth acts as the bottom-up governing constraint on that cohesion, making sure the team remains coherent with actuality rather than merely with itself. Without Earth, Fire can burn in a closed chamber, bright and self-reinforcing, while losing all contact with the world outside the flame.
Auftragstaktik, Actionable-waveguide-vision, gives direction to effort. Earth checks whether the present circumstances actually afford a path toward the vision. A vivid future without contact becomes fantasy. Contact without vision becomes mere adaptation. Together they yield direction that is both imaginative and real.
Behendigkeit, Tempo-fluidity-spaciousness, prevents effective patterns from becoming stale. Earth is what Behendigkeit refreshes. Fingerspitzengefühl tells the actor when the current pattern is still viable and when it is already losing traction. Without Earth, agility becomes restless motion. Earth without agility becomes attachment to yesterday’s read.
Fingerspitzengefühl in the mandala
The mandala is a network of nodes strung together, reaching out to the world. Each string is both a sensory communication and an opportunity to respond. The cohesive team constitutes a mandala where each node is aware of itself, of its connections to other nodes, and of the space between. Through that awareness, care and responsibility propagate as vibrations along each string. There is no ground in space unless we weave it: a mandala of responsiveness to actuality, forming the earth on which all further maneuver depends.
